This appears to be a piece of petrified wood, found in Arizona in a field sprinkled with small pieces of petrified wood. It is one inch across. I would love to know why it has these great bumps.

Noel, and I think it looks more like a piece of petrified pinecone.
Also enjoyed your article in Art Jewelry - neat that you used a picture of my project.

Yes, I think you have petrified wood and the bumps are the "bark". The original plant wasn't a tree as we know it with growth rings in the cross section. It was a plant like a fern or cycad. There won't be growth rings in this wood, but you should be able to see parallel fibers in the pattern behind the "bark". These parallel fibers will enable you to tell that it is not coral.

The suggestion of contacting the paleontology department is a good one for a better idea as to the species.

It seems, to me, to be Palmwood. I know you can find it West of Wickenburg, AZ. and other places. All examples I've seen have spots like that.
